The Ferrari Portofino Raises the Bar

The Portofino fills the shoes left by the California T, and buffs those shoes to an even more radiant sheen than ever before. Though it's Ferrari's entry-level model, the Portofino will still set you back a fair amount if you want to drive it off the showroom floor.

Following in the California T's Footsteps

The Portofino takes after its predecessor in many ways, but improves upon the California T even in areas where the latter excelled. The Portofino, like the California T, is a retractable hardtop convertible, and both are powered by a twin-turbo 3.9-liter V8 mounted up front. Both have rear seats (however nominal they may have been in the California), but much has changed between the models.

There are Almost 6,000 Miles Between California and Portofino

Lest we forget that the Portofino is a fantastic, fresh Ferrari model in its own right, let's point out the differences.

• The Portofino weighs 176 pounds less than the California T, thanks to many redesigns and innovations. Everything from the chassis to the seats and air conditioning has been fully evaluated for weight and efficiency, leading to strategic improvements and lighter components.

• The engine receives some mechanical upgrades, as well as re-tuned software for an increase of 39 horsepower and 4 lb-ft of torque. Ferrari optimized the vehicle's dynamics as well, for better response and ride feel.

PERFORMANCE

Improvements to the existing V8 engine include redesigned pistons, intake system, connecting rods, exhaust, and engine-management software. These enhancements give the twin-turbocharged V8 591 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque. It will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph takes just 3.3 seconds, and can hit speeds of over 199 mph.

The Portofino boasts a conspicuous lack of turbo lag, and Ferrari points to a few advances that lend themselves to the car's instantaneous throttle response, from the flat-plane crankshaft to the single-cast exhaust manifold. Variable Boost Management fine-tunes torque delivery through each gear selected, optimizing acceleration and fuel economy.

Ferrari stiffened up the springs -- 15.5% in front and 19% in back -- for the Portofino and made use of the latest magnetorheological damping technology to essentially make Sport mode sportier and Comfort mode more comfortable. The improved Magnaride system handles most of the vertical driving dynamics, while an electronic rear differential takes care of the lateral action.

The electronic rear differential, integrated with F1-Trac traction control, gives the Portofino excellent handling and easy control even in lower-grip environments. The Portofino is also Ferrari's first GT model to feature electric power steering, which is a significant factor in the vehicle's overall responsiveness and feedback.

Its legendary Prancing Horse race heritage is apparent at first glance, and hearing the engine rev will make you weak in the knees -- just like any Ferrari would.

INTERIOR

All that power and precision comes with an entirely livable interior. The Portofino's interior is exquisitely sporty and elegantly athletic. It adds an air of sophistication to a car that inspires every driver's inner kid to squeal with delight.

You may not want to subject your closest friends to a weekend road trip in the rear seats of the Portofino, but it's better than its predecessor in the legroom and comfort department. It's a perfectly appropriate perch for a trip into Boston or jaunt along the coast, so you can easily take the family out for a thrilling ride. With the top down, a wind deflector helps keep you comfortable with less wind through the cabin and a much quieter ride.

Amenities include a 10.2-inch touchscreen for infotainment controls, improved air conditioning, 18-way power-adjustable seats, and a revised steering wheel and driver cockpit.

The driver-centric cockpit in the Portofino is well-designed for full control. The dash instruments are easy to read, giving you the essentials at a glance. Steering-wheel mounted controls allow you to change drive modes quickly on the fly. The central touchscreen is easily accessible for you or your front passenger to operate.

The Portofino's boot accommodates a generous amount of cargo. It's not just for your purse or briefcase when you have a passenger in front; you can actually fit a few carry-on suitcases in the trunk when the top is up. Even with the top down, you're likely to have more than enough room to stow gym gear, shopping bags, or anything else you need to take with you.
